How to Review and Optimise Smart Campaigns

Feature Overview

Reviewing and optimising Smart Campaigns allows you to evaluate real-time conversion data, apply audience recommendations from Covatic’s AI-powered optimisation engine, and remove underperforming segments. By continuously refining your campaign’s active audiences, you maximise conversion lift while keeping reach aligned with your goals.

Prerequisites
  • A registered Covatic account.
  • A Live or active Smart Campaign running in your dashboard.
  • Active ad exposure tracking in your ad server using the campaign’s Master Key Value.
Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Access the Smart Campaigns Overview
From the main navigation menu:

  • Click Campaigns in the left-hand sidebar.
  • Locate your campaign card (marked with a blue Smart tag) and click the Campaign Name to open the Smart Campaign Details page.

2. Evaluate Active Audience Performance

On the Overview tab, scroll down to the Current Audiences table to inspect every segment currently targeted by your campaign:

  • Performance Tiers: Each active segment is evaluated by the AI optimisation engine and tagged with a performance indicator:
    • Excellent (Green): High conversion efficiency; strongly recommended to keep active.
    • Good (Blue): Solid performance meeting target benchmarks.
    • Average (Yellow): Moderate performance; worth monitoring.
    • Poor (Red): Low conversion efficiency relative to campaign averages.

3. Apply Audience Recommendations

Directly below active audiences, review the Suggested New Audiences table generated by the optimisation engine:

  • Accepting a Suggestion: If a suggested audience shows an Excellent or Good rating:
    • Click the green + Add button next to the audience name.
    • A confirmation banner reading “Suggestion accepted successfully” will appear.
    • The segment will automatically move up into your Current Audiences table and apply to live adserver targeting via your Master Key Value.
  • Dismissing a Suggestion: If a suggested segment does not fit your strategic goals, click Dismiss to clear it from your recommendations list.

4. Remove Underperforming Audiences

To prevent wasted ad spend on segments with low conversion efficiency:

  • In the Current Audiences table, locate any segment flagged with a Poor or low performance rating.
  • Click the red – Remove button on the right side of the row.
  • In the Remove Audience modal popup:
    • (Optional) Type an internal reason for removal into the text box (defaults to “Manually removed by user”).
    • Click the red Remove Audience button to confirm.
  • A banner reading “Audience removed successfully” will appear, and the segment will cease targeting.

5. Manually Add Audiences (Optional)
If you want to test a pre-defined audience outside of the AI optimisation engine’s recommendations:

  • Click the blue Add Audience button above the Current Audiences table.
  • Search for or select your desired segment from the platform library modal.
  • Check the box next to the audience card and click Add Audience.

6. Analyse Campaign Insights & Conversion Lift

Click the Campaign Insights tab at the top of the details page to evaluate campaign impact and attribution metrics:

  • Conversion Performance Summary:
    • First 7 Days vs. Last 7 Days (Avg): Tracks initial conversion rate against your recent 7-day average.
    • Rate Improvement: Displays percentage lift in conversion rate over time.
    • Peak & Peak Improvement: Displays the highest single-day conversion rate achieved during the campaign.
  • Campaign Totals: Reviews total net ad exposures, total conversions (e.g., page views, purchases, form fills), overall conversion rate, and total optimisation changes performed.
  • Targeting Effectiveness Cards: Highlights top-performing audience segments and their specific conversion likelihood (e.g., “276% More likely to convert”).
  • Page View or Conversion Rate Over Time Chart: Interactively visualises conversion rate trends alongside daily ad exposures.
  • Targeting Changes Log: Displays historical change events (e.g., Week 2 additions or Week 5 removals) and correlates them directly with 7-day impact and cumulative conversion lift.

7. Audit Optimisation History & Team Notes

  • History Tab: Click History to view a full, transparent audit log of all audience changes. This table records:
    • Change Type: Indicates whether a segment was added via Suggestion Accepted, Manually Added, or Removed.
    • User & Date: Tracks who made the change and exact timestamps.
    • Reason: Logs the specific reason provided during audience removal or addition.
  • Notes Tab: Click Notes to collaborate with team members, record campaign milestones, or document client requests.

8. Export Campaign Reports

To share performance reports with stakeholders, advertisers, or clients:

  • Navigate to the Campaign Insights tab.
  • In the top-right corner, select your preferred format:
    • Export CSV: Downloads raw campaign metrics and conversion data for spreadsheet analysis.
    • Export PDF: Opens a formatted document preview ready for printing or direct PDF export.
Success Verification
  • Real-Time Ad Server Sync: Any audience added or removed in the Covatic platform automatically updates live campaign targeting in your ad server via the active Master Key Value.
  • Audit Confirmation: Accepted suggestions and manual removals immediately populate as log entries in the History tab.

Pro-Tip: Check the Recommendations Cadence toggle at the top of the campaign details page. While Daily cadence provides rapid updates, keeping the cadence on Weekly ensures the optimisation engine has enough data to accurately rank new audience candidates before presenting them as recommendations.
